Can't wait to see what folks come up with while trying to help you! I sorta feel like a shoe salesman who bought you a size 6.

Vamos a ver. Oh, don't worry, all resources are good. I read one of the short stories at the link you gave in between checking on what was on the stove, and while I didn't understand the majority of it it did jog a few memories of vocab loose and gave me a chance to practice my accent.

I'm surprised those 5 novels are categorized as suitable for beginners. They seem more like upper-intermediate to me. The article should be titled "accessible classics" instead. It says "Beginners and Intermediates" and I think the site was written by a language teacher so I guess that was her call. That said, I'm glad my German teachers didn't introduce us to literature too early on and we focused instead on reading short passages within our grammar textbooks.

We are all different, but I've never found literature that easy to grasp in languages other than English - the emotional levels aren't easy to comprehend I find. I prefer a history book, though history itself as a genre of writing isn't totally unrelated to literature Anyway, I think there are great options for the beginner and intermediate reader available directly from publishers in Germany - the publisher Hueber for example comes to mind.

Yes, there are is a huge amount of good graded readers in German, many more than in most languages. I found the ones written by Leonhard Thoma and published by Hueber quite enjoyable and not childish.

They are collections of very short stories typically pages long , which might be better for the beginner.
