When You Are Engulfed in Flames. Barrel Fever: Stories and Essays. Editorial Reviews Amazon. Sedaris inhabits this world as a misanthrope chronicling all things petty and small. In Me Talk Pretty One Day Sedaris is as determined as ever to be nobody's hero--he never triumphs, he never conquers--and somehow, with each failure, he inadvertently becomes everybody's favorite underdog. The world's most eloquent malcontent, Sedaris has turned self-deprecation into a celebrated art form--one that is perhaps best experienced in audio.
Unable to disguise the lisp that has become his trademark, Sedaris highlights to hilarious extent the frustration of reading "childish s -laden texts recounting the adventures of seals or settlers named Sassy or Samuel.
Running time: Sedaris is Garrison Keillor's evil twin: Many of the 27 short essays collected here which appeared originally in the New Yorker, Esquire and elsewhere deal with his father, Lou, to whom the book is dedicated. Lou is a micromanager who tries to get his uninterested children to form a jazz combo and, when that fails, insists on boosting David's career as a performance artist by heckling him from the audience. Sedaris suggests that his father's punishment for being overly involved in his kids' artistic lives is David's brother Paul, otherwise known as "The Rooster," a half-literate miscreant whose language is outrageously profane.
Sedaris also writes here about the time he spent in France and the difficulty of learning another language.
After several extended stays in a little Norman village and in Paris, Sedaris had progressed, he observes, "from speaking like an evil baby to speaking like a hillbilly.

One time, we had to pull over because we were scared of getting into an accident. I would go into more detail, but it's better to listen or read for yourself. He's absolutely incredible.

Highly recommended from a friend I'm not disappointed. I'm more than half way through the book and i want to hear more. I connected with the author because of the clever humor he and siblings used to mess with their parents.
This book is amazing on tape and I love the author's narration. Its so much more authentic and expressive. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Based on all the reviews I bought this and prepared to be fantastically entertained. I couldn't wait for the laughter to bubble up and spill out of me. I'm still waiting. Sadly, I have finished the book and other than a few chuckles, no laughter, as was promised by the other reviewers.
In fact , perhaps because the reviews set it up as a hilarious read, I was expecting too much, but most of wasn't funny at all. I do agree with the other reviews that the section on him learning to speak French was funny, but it's a small section of the book.
I kept reading it waiting for the laughter to come, for the promised humor to appear-after all many of the reviewers had said the author was the funniest writer out there, but if he is this book isn't a good representation of his work.
If you are looking for a laugh out loud, how do I not wake my spouse up while I read this in bed cause I'm laughing so hard book, skip this one.
Me Talk Pretty One Day
I don't know how much the other reviewers were paid but that's the only thing that explains the over the top reviews.
We had it HARD. The thing about being Baby-boomers was that we had fathers who grew up during the Great Depression. To a man, they were determined to make our childhoods as miserable as theirs.
It's a tribute to the determination of the "Greatest Generation" that they succeeded so well with such poor material. It's easy to make your children miserable when there's not enough food to eat, but when you not only have money for necessities, but for luxuries, it's MUCH harder.
And so our fathers had to resort to tricks like Lou Sedaris forcing his tone-deaf children to take up musical instruments or boring them half to death with his nerdy-engineer explanations of things that no one wanted explained. In general, we preferred our mothers who were too busy watching soap operas to know we existed.
That was life in the Good Old Days and you can have it. But we got even with them. Like David Sedaris, we went off to college and grew our hair long or dressed funny or did drugs or got useless degrees in Art History just to annoy them. Or we dropped out of college and bummed around the country with people our parents moved to the suburbs to keep us away from. Or we took menial jobs to find out how "real people" live. What makes Sedaris great is that he did ALL of these stupid things.

His family is another inspiration. You Cant Kill the Rooster is a portrait of his brother who talks incessant hip-hop slang to his bewildered father. And no one hones a finer fury in response to such modern annoyances as restaurant meals presented in ludicrous towers and cashiers with 6-inch fingernails.
Sedaris is an amazing reader whose appearances draw hundreds, and his performancesincluding a jaw-dropping impression of Billie Holiday singing I wish I were an Oscar Meyer weinerare unforgettable. Sedariss essays on living in Paris are some of the funniest hes ever written. At last, someone even meaner than the French!
The sort of blithely sophisticated, loopy humour that might have resulted if Dorothy Parker and James Thurber had had a love child. Entertainment Weekly on Barrel Fever Sidesplitting Not one of the essays in this new collection failed to crack me up; frequently I was helpless.
