After a month of working a sixteen-hour day tiredness had caught up with him, and, although he could mange tiredness, what he longed for was rest, peace and, for two blessed days the company of Emma. He told himself he only had himself to blame for the spoilt weekend. He wasn't compelled to undertake a possible murder investigation, however politically or socially important that The Emotional Awakening of Commander Dangliesh, 1 Dec "The call could hardly have come at a less convenient time.
He wasn't compelled to undertake a possible murder investigation, however politically or socially important that victim or challenging the crime.
We come to realize that Commander Dalgliesh is a human after all. He does love Emma and he does worry that she may not love him as he does her.
The worries of professional man wrapped up in his life and how to separate the two so that he may enjoy what really matters. A suspicious death has occurred on this most elite island. What they find is a lovely, remote island that is populated by people who all have their own mysteries to hide. It appears that a famous author, Nathan Oliver has been found hanging from the lighthouse and he is dead. Was this suicide or was this murder? That is exactly what Adam Dalgliesh and Kate and.
Benton are there to find out In the midst of the investigation, one of the occupants of the island becomes critically ill and the diagnosis is SARS, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. The symptoms are suspiciously similar to what Commander Daggles has been experiencing and as he becomes more ill he is taken to the infirmary where he is put in isolation. Kate Miskin and Benton-Smith must now take on this investigation, and this is a very important career move for Kate Miskin.
She has a chance to show that she can carry this investigation to the conclusion. The cast of characters also isolated at the island become a little frantic when another murder is uncovered. The tension peaks and Kate and Benton-Smith must rise to the occasion. Will he lose the affection of his beloved Emma by taking on this case? Detective Inspector Kate Miskin also finds this investigation an emotional rollercoaster.
Her past life and loves come to the fore, and can she rise to the occasion of leading the investigation and solving these difficult crimes? Sergeant Francis Benton-Smith has so far not shown that he can be part of a team, and can he really work with a woman who is his superior?
PD James has written a superb novel. One of her best, in my mind. It is brilliantly thought out, and the suspense and tension keep us hanging on tenter hooks. Highly recommended. Feb 25, Yngvild rated it really liked it Shelves: I bought The Lighthouse twice: From the blurb on the dust jacket and a quick flick though the book, I did not recognize the story and thought it must be a new P D James novel.
That tells you that the story is not particularly memorable and that professional reviewers do not always read the books they review. There is the same privately owned English island, a German whose father died in the war, and a genteel set of guests generally despised by their loyal employees.
The similarities in the plot end there. As always addressing contemporary concerns, in The Lighthouse P D James builds the story around the continual stress many professionals are under. If it is not their marriage or partnership breaking up, it is a stumbling career or public intrusion into their private lives.
Where are all these things likely to come to the boil? Obviously, it is at a retreat for overstressed professional and public figures. The downside to this topic is that it is a rather bleak subject, especially for us over-stressed professionals looking for escape. I have only a couple of bones to pick with a book I enjoyed both times. The usual excellent prose contains more groceries and clothes than I care about: Now if he had been wearing pink cashmere, I would have seen the point of this detail.
There is also the problem of sex. On the other hand, at least the book does not leave me with a sense of inferiority that every relationship consists of consummated hot passion. These are more realistic characters than one meets in most fiction. Jan 26, Jack Heath rated it liked it Shelves: I wanted to elevate it to a four but just couldn't stretch that far.

There may be a security issue on Combe Island, just off the coast of Cornwall, and Commander Dalgliesh is called-in to confer with the higher-ups in London.
The PM is planning to visit the retreat soon with some important dignitaries and the death, whether murder or suicide is not yet known, of a famous author on the small island needs quick attention. Send in Dalgleish. There are few residents; it should be straightfo 3 Stars. There are few residents; it should be straightforward. But it isn't. The cantankerous Nathan Oliver has been found hanging in the lighthouse.
A note asking him to attend an early morning meeting at that location may have been viewed by more than the intended recipient. It's the time of the SARS outbreak and that too has a role.

Some of the story is not tied together as well as I would like, but there's another Adam Dalgleish in my future for sure. January Nov 05, Anne Booklady Molinarolo rated it really liked it Shelves: Adam Dalgliesh, Kate Mishkin and her new partner fly in to a remote island frequented by the rich and famous to investigate a murder. A wealthy and renown author has been found hanging in the Lighthouse. There is no love loss among the island's residents and guests; the writer was a despicable man and no one but no one is mourning his loss.
Dalgliesh and his team have a wealth of suspects as well as great digs. His boss wants the case contained - no press. But something else is present on this b Adam Dalgliesh, Kate Mishkin and her new partner fly in to a remote island frequented by the rich and famous to investigate a murder. But something else is present on this beautiful island getaway that could threaten each person, and it is deadly. This was and still is my introduction to the novels of P.
She is surprisingly easy to read and knows how to keep the reader turning the page. She is a master at building suspense and well developed characters. I thought what she used to contain the people on the island was slightly way over the top though. That said, The Lighthouse is a very good whodunnit! Jan 06, Girl from Mumbai added it. As usual her books are set in the English countryside, and her mastery over the English language is precise and spot on.
The plot is set on a very remote 'Combe Island', which is a private holiday retreat for only the elite. The story is engaging and grips you right from the start with each investigator getting some space beside Dalgeliesh for a change. It is an out and out murder mystery with twists and turns, emotions running high with fabulous use of imagery while describing the island.
A perfect read for P D James fans. Jan 02, Joyce rated it it was ok. This is the first mystery novel I've read. I have to say this author has a decent vocabulary; enough to use words like etiolated, atavistic, soubriquets in proper context and not have them stick out like a sore thumb. She also uses a few metaphors and decent geography details.
Speaking of details, however, what is it with the room descriptions? Every room in the manor and five cottages is laid out in detail; the exact angle of every chair in relation to the windows, fireplace, doors, the pattern This is the first mystery novel I've read.
Every room in the manor and five cottages is laid out in detail; the exact angle of every chair in relation to the windows, fireplace, doors, the patterns on the wallpaper etc. Since non of this is important to the story why do it? Mid book - I've had enough suspect enquiries; all eight of them at least four pages long and saying the exact same thing.
I didn't do it. A brilliant novelist is found hanged from a lighthouse on an exclusive resort island off the Cornish coast. Is it suicide or murder? Well, this is an Adam Dalgliesh book, so that's not such a mystery. And actually I guessed the murderer's identity pretty early, unusual for me reading James. But still and all this is good example of her work. It has all her typical accoutrements: Several suspects with strong and sympathetic motives, well established before any violence occurs; AD and his team reso A brilliant novelist is found hanged from a lighthouse on an exclusive resort island off the Cornish coast.
Several suspects with strong and sympathetic motives, well established before any violence occurs; AD and his team resorting to numerous psychological techniques to draw out information they need; and glimpses into the detectives' own mental shadows. It's maybe a bit formulaic, and not the best of her novels I've read, but it was solidly enjoyable nonetheless. The backstories of the main characters were good too. I confess, I really don't understand Adam and Emma's relationship. I don't doubt they love each other, but they both sure struggle to express it and to be open with each other. I'm sorry Adam and Kate aren't getting toget I liked the guessing of who killed the nasty mean old man in the light house, and honestly, it was a shame they didn't take out his daughter as well.
I'm sorry Adam and Kate aren't getting together, but I'm intrigued by the new twist with Piers. Given the island's prominence in international politics, I was half afraid Piers was using Kate to get a foothold on Combe. I know I'm coming to the end of this series and I'm hoping it all ends well. Oct 26, Jessica rated it really liked it Shelves: I haven't read much P.
James so I don't know if this is one of her best. She does seem to be in top form. James follows her detectives as well as the islanders: The result is a compellingly rich tapestry.
It seems James's characters enjoy healthy sex lives, especially women, and especially detectives. Good to know!
