The framework of the Characters seem stripped from those of The Lord of the Rings, without the piercing seriousness of the Silmarilion , or the contemptous, child-like nature of The Hobbit. Your characters should be rich in personnality, emotionally deep and the epitome of their culture or race. With some variable to ignite the plot, whether it be the quest based upon an archaic artifact, or the more cliched beginnings to ''Heroic Quests'', you at first believe this to be one of the better gene-copies of the sentinels of Our Genre.

This book is infuriating to the extreme. Its not the sheer unoriginality, nor the utterly dry characters, nor even the rate at which they are killed-off and replaced by equally shallow and ultimately worthless characters destined for an axe in some way. Its the mere fact, that the author has done nothing to improve or add his own twist to the Tolkein-esque theatrics, themes and characters.

The races are divulged in poor detail, their Religious Beliefs, social-structure and military given but a few morsels of the book. And the potential this book dashes it utterly colossal. There is the potential for several crucial and bloody battles, with not a single one dignified by ample description or length.

Those that are, are of a quality shoddy and lacking, with emphasis on ridiculously uninteresting aspects.

Der Krieg der Zwerge

Other irritances is the rate at which the story unfolds. Firstly, the contradiction is that there simply is far too much happening, and so the author moves characters hundreds of miles or ''orbits'' which took me an eon to correctly discover represented days, at a time. Finally, and most irking is the choice of language in what scraps of description there is. Varying words are used to the wrong context, in a poor way, or even the wrong genre! Maybe this is translation difficulties, in which a hefty segment of the blame should be bestowed upon the editor.

See a Problem?

My reading-diet is compossed mostly of tie-in fiction, or that built upon already founded happenings, but this was but an unoriginal carbon-copy of a multitude of other works, somehow worstened. If you enjoy simple, base and cliched fiction, with surprisingly few redeeming qualities then you are more than welcome to such.

The only positive I could possibly conjure is the amusing attitude of Rondario, and with this novel being essentially a short introduction to The Lord of the Rings. Another home run Mr.

Heitz you continue to sate my appetite for destruction and story. Tungdil and friends return in this epic. I like how there is more conflict added within the main character to keep the story interesting. And an in depth view on the thirdlings and how tungdil truly is unique. Tungdil continues to be the leader we know he can be. I am overly excited to read the third book and will be buying the 3rd on release day. View 1 comment. Great book! Completely enjoyed it. Recommend it to anyone that enjoys colorful characters.

Die Zwerge Series

The saga of the dwarves continued with this second volume in the series and it didn't disappoint me one bit, as some second volumes tend to do after an initial wow. The threat was credible, and the characters we knew and grew attached to are more mature, conflicted and nuanced, without the whole thing turning into a psychological novel first and foremost.

For a fantasy series, it reads wonderfully and it's so well dosed and delivered that it's sure to become a classic. More wonderful fantasy schlock. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. The only reason to review this book is to warn people off wasting their time with the book or the series. I was a bit annoyed with the first book and the bone headed stupid that is sprinkled liberally around it.

Example a lone lived race of dwarves "forget" all about a fantasy level underground railway. Uh OK, they're going to just lose something that would have such an impact on their way of life and their ability to keep in touch with the other dwarf realms? I swallowed and went along. Our heroe The only reason to review this book is to warn people off wasting their time with the book or the series.

Our heroes want to use the railway to complete their quest. Of course this means the author throws obstacles in their way so they have to leave the railway at every opportunity to complete side quests and have rip roring adventures on their way to the firstlings. A tribe of dwarves who haven't been heard from in years. To find out that they know all about the underground railway and they were after cutting off all outside contact because SHOCK they had a female ruler.

This isn't the only WTF moment in the first book but I gave the author a 2nd chance. Mainly cause I'd borrowed both books at the same time and I had that train wreck kind of facination as to what he was going to get up to in the next one.

You know what? He didn't manage to claw back out of the abyss. Characters die almost at random. The bad dwarves turn up and they have a 2nd underground railway that the good guys never noticed. The author throws around large armies with no care.

The battles are vague. THe big mystery of who is the spy is laughably obvious The entire book is a car crash. Everytime I started to enjoy a part of the story something arbitary and stupid would happen. Nice thing is - it is a long book so value for money.

Overall, it's entertaining but not a page-turner. Unlike some books, I didn't find myself compelled to read late into the night.

The characters are good generally but there are times when they are a little too comical. You do want the central hero, Tungdil, to do well and he does. There are some nice twists to keep the story from being too straightforward, but they are fairly predictable. Telling the tale from the dwarves viewpoint is nice an Nice thing is - it is a long book so value for money.

Telling the tale from the dwarves viewpoint is nice and you do find yourself rooting for them. I preferred book 1 as I felt that, after a slow start, there was more twists than book 2 which for me was a little too obvious.

Having said that, it was a fun book and good value for money given the size of it. Barcollare senza mollare con birra di nano nel boccale Insomma, siamo sempre sui livelli dozzinali del primo romanzo: Un po' per caso e un po' per confusione generale, un risultato sufficiente se lo porta a casa. The story is great. The writing is "eh" probably because it's a translation. I love the characters of this book and the ideas behind the world that Heitz creates. However, things do have a tendency to just It's like most stories in that you know X, Y, and Z are events that have to take place, but usually the author fleshes out the struggle to accomplish it.

In War of the Dwarves and in the Dwarves, really the actual struggles and climax points are brief and overly simple. I don't kno The story is great. I don't know why this is because I can't imagine the book being much longer. I don't know, the book perplexes me.

It's kind of But I enjoyed it because I like the high fantasy version of dwarves and I enjoyed the characters. May 14, Dokusha rated it really liked it Shelves: Wie schon der erste Band ist auch dieser gut geschrieben. Alles, was man von einem Fantasy-"Epos" erwartet, ist da: Ich werde die Serie auf jeden Fall weiterlesen.

Very good, nearly as good as the first one! Loved following along with Tungdil and his friends in the fight to save thier world. Many surprises happened along the way I was NOT expecting! Filled with humor, drama and of course action the "war of the Dwarves" was very satisfying. Long live the children of the smith. Just as good as the first!!! Love these sort of books that make your imagination go wild. Love it Love it Love it. This book is fooking amazing. Buy it. The follow-up to the first Dwarves book sees the dwarves again join forces with the humans and now join forces with their age old enemies the elves to battle against a new source of evil.

There is a lot packed into this book with a number of stand-offs against the evil thirdling dwarves, the evil elves and an invading force from the Outer Lands. For me at times it felt like the story was being made up on the spot with the overarching plot changing a number of times to suit the author's mood. At o The follow-up to the first Dwarves book sees the dwarves again join forces with the humans and now join forces with their age old enemies the elves to battle against a new source of evil.

At one point the feared enemy in the West was just a hoax by the thirdlings then it was real etc etc. There were still some good action scenes but these were in the minority here as so much of the book was taken up with politics and intrigue.

Tungdil (Die Zwerge - Graphic Novels, #1) by Markus Heitz (4 star ratings)

Something of a comedown from the first in the series. A 3 star effort but I'm marking it up because it's so over the top. This is one roller-coaster ride that swings and lurches from war to disaster to awkward romance and derring-do and back again. I don't think the author really stopped and had a look what he wrote, as there's major inconsistencies and continuity issues throughout, but that's trumped by the audacity of the whole thing.

One flaw I do find in this novel and the one before it is that the characters' motivation is primarily one of revenge - good guy and bad guy alike. Alas, it doesn't get any deeper than that. Everyone is out to right some perceived wrong against them. I use the term "great fun" in a lot of my reviews, and for good reason. While many of the books I review are devoid of intellectual worth or heft, they're a hoot of a read. This one is no different. I'm enjoying this series but lets be real, these books aren't the height of literature.
