From a bright new talent comes a riveting psychological thriller about an American exchange student in France involved in a suspicious accident, and the journalist determined to break the story and uncover the dark secrets a small town is hiding. On a quiet summer morning, seventeen-year-old American exchange student Quinn Perkins stumbles out of the woods near the small French town of St. Though she is cynical about the media circus that suddenly forms around the girl, Boston journalist Molly Swift cannot deny she is also drawn to the mystery and travels to St. She is prepared to do anything to learn the truth, including lying so she can get close to Quinn. But when a shocking discovery turns the town against Quinn and she is arrested for the murders of the Blavette family, she finds an unlikely ally in Molly. Is Quinn truly innocent and as much a victim as the Blavettes—or is she a cunning, diabolical killer intent on getting away with murder…? It is far from a peachy living arrangement. Molly finds a friend in a local inspector, Valentin, just in time for the Blavette family disappearance.

What is going on in the small town of St. The novel is told in short journal-like chapters that go back and forth in time and intertwine the dual protagonists, Quinn and Molly. Early on we know it involves the woods she felt she was being chased through, and some very weird messages and pictures sent to her iPhone just prior to the accident.

There are also men in her life: Freddie, the seemingly sadistic French boy and a close friend of the Blavette family, and Raphael Blavette, the stud-son home from college. The women are more complex, it seems. Horsley is at the top of her game. A British author with an incredible ear for American dialogue and knowledge of our sometimes stunted culture.

This is a truly professional and gifted author, with expert insight into a world beneath all the coziness we see and want to believe is real. Horsley takes us under the skin of postcard family life and behind the picturesque postcard towns.

An American Girl in London by Sara Jeannette Duncan

I've always been fascinated by France and have wanted to learn French but alas it is very hard and I haven't been very successful. The setting of this story is a small village in France with secrets and treachery all around. I loved the interwoven French language and while I didn't understand a lot of it I was able to figure out what was being said.

Quinn is a young teenage foreign exchange student staying with single mother Emilie and her two children Noe and Raphael. She is the epitome of unreliable narrator and her story is told through past and present in multiple mediums: In the prologue we learn she ran out of the woods with no memory of what happened or where her exchange family is. She is taken to the hospital where she slowly comes to and starts remembering bits and pieces.

We also are in the head of an investigative journalist named Molly Swift. She takes it upon herself to sneak into the hospital and pretend to be Quinn's long lost aunt.

While Quinn is a neglected child I can't really imagine that both her father and her stepmother would allow her to stay in France and when she becomes accused of murder still do nothing.

They are fairly well off and when it starts to become a media circus I would think they would come out and try to help Quinn at least to save themselves but that is not the case with Mr. Perkins and their soon to be born child. There were other instances where I had to suspend disbelief at some of the characters, their actions, and things happening in the story for the sake of fiction. It wasn't enough to detract from the story but enough to make it not five stars. It was her first novel and she has some improvements to make but I could see her turning this into a series with Molly and it being quite good.

I did try to guess the ending throughout a lot of them book and I didn't see what exactly happened coming, but it wasn't exactly unpredictable either. I felt like the part about Raphael's crimes could have been more fleshed out.

Overall it was a decent story and I'm happy to have read it. It was fast paced and exciting which is saying a lot as I've been on a thriller bender lately. When the "big revelation"comes at the end. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Despite trying to jazz it up by writing from the point of view of different characters a la "Gone Girl" and jumping back and forth in time, the plot was boring. When the "big revelation"comes at the end, it's more of a "That's it?

The main characters were uninteresting and unsympathetic. It also badly needed editing. There were inconsistencies, such as the fact that the story took place in July and August and there were constant complaints about the enervating heat, yet there is a scene where the characters are sitting in front of a roaring fire!

The author must also hate France and French people. Every single French character in the book was nasty and horrid and she even made the scenery in the South of France sound ugly.

I've been there! It's beautiful! And the people are nice! See all 74 reviews.
